When was Mendeleev's periodic system discovered?

There is a legend, which says that the system of chemical elements Mendeleev saw in a dream. Once, when he was asked how the discovery of Mendeleyev's periodic system was accomplished, he said: "I thought about it, maybe for twenty years, and you think: I was sitting and suddenly ... ready." Making up the table, Mendeleev wrote on all the cards all the basic properties for each element, at that time 63 were known. Then these cards were rearranged to them not once, so that the rows of elements similar in their properties turned out, the rows were also compared with each other.

The results of this painstaking work were the firstversion of the scheme in 1869, the elements were arranged horizontally in 9 rows and diagonally in 6 columns. Later, in 1870, D.I. Mendeleev published his second version of the system in the Fundamentals of Chemistry, which is more familiar and familiar to us: the horizontal columns have taken the form of eight groups arranged vertically, while the vertically arranged 6 columns of the first steel variant are periods ranging from alkali metals to halogen. In this case, the periods began to be divided into 2 rows, while the elements that were part of the group of rows formed subgroups.

Differences between the periodic table and others

The work of Mendeleev differed from the others in thathe classified the elements both by chemical similarity and by atomic mass. Also in his table he left the cells that were not filled for the elements that were not yet open at the time. On the basis of all his works, Mendeleev formulated the Periodic Law in 1871.
