Today, you can often hear talk about sports games. Many people discuss with friends, acquaintances or workmates the latest football or hockey match. However, not everyone is keen on watching various sports events and therefore may not know what a particular term means. In this article we will consider such a sport as hockey.
Let's take a closer look at what hockey is and what it is like.
Hockey is a sport
Hockey is one of the world's most popular sports. Hockey is played on various types of grounds - grass, ice, wood, plastic or tartan. The essence is simple - the players are trying to hit the puck or the ball with the help of an opponent's goal stick. Each team has five players and there is a goalkeeper who protects a small gate.
There are two versions of the origin of the word "hockey"
- British According to the English version, in the Middle Ages, after the harvest, they organized games where the ball had to be brought into the enemy's zone with special curved “hoki”. In the Southern States of the USA, curved “hockey” sticks are used to this day;
- Canadian.According to Canada, the word "hockey" was taken from the language of the Mohawk Indians, who played a similar game on the grass. The word was translated - "insulting, painful." This name came from the fact that after the game the losing team was subjected to physical punishment.
