What is Acmeism?
Immediately it should be said that the representatives of this literary movement quickly went beyond its framework in search of creative ideas. In spite of this, Acmeism fulfilled its main goal, since the poets of that time were able to convey to people with their works the beauty of the external, real world. Therefore, answering the question of what Acmeism is, we note that it has a conditional framework that separates it from other movements of the last century in connection with the events taking place at that time.
Formation of Acmeism
Turning to historical data, we would like to tell how this short path began, when acmeism in literature is gaining its popularity, and it forms an extraordinary cohesion and idea that they convey to the public in all their works among young Russian poets.
Initially fashionable at the time, the poets attended literary meetings, the so-called “Ivanovo environments”, which took place in St. Petersburg in the apartment of Vyacheslav Ivanov. In this room, the poets studied versification and called it the “Tower” among themselves. And already in 1911, everyone who visited the “tower” founded a kind of literary association called “Shop of Poets”, where such representatives of Acmeism as S. Gorodetsky and N. Gumilyov taught other poets' professional skills. By the way, after 2 years, namely in 1913, in January, the same leaders of Tsekh published the declarations of the group of acmeists, in the then popular magazine Apollon.
Traits of acmeism
With all this, of course, the question arises of exactly what distinguished the works of acmeists from the symbolists, who also continued their work. And even reading some representatives of Acmeism, for example, A. Akhmatov, M. Zenkevich, O. Mandelstam or V. Narbut, we cannot but notice the desire for thirst for life. However, further we will note all the main features of Acmeism:
- Lyrical plot.
- Adamism, which means "bestial essence."
- Image psychology of experience.
- Hedonism, that is, enjoyment of life.
- Narratives and dialogues.
- Clarism, which displays the clarity and simplicity of the language.
Principles of Acmeism
In addition, Acmeists are far from interested in the underworld and fantasy, but only in the real world in which we live and do not notice all of its beauty. But at the same time, in their works both mythological images and plots appear, since culture still remains the most important value that is worth mentioning. All this clearly describes the basic principles of Acmeism:
- Appeal to the authenticity of human feelings.
- Acceptance of the real, earthly world and its beauty.
- The clarity of images.
- The liberation of poetry from the influence of symbolism.
- Aesthetic associations with world culture.
- Accurate definition of word meanings.
- Poetisation of the natural beginning of the world and primeval emotions.
Through all these principles, the Acmeists tried to convey to people truly great thoughts and values of life. Through their works, they taught people to love their body and see around them real, not mystical beauty, to value their own and the lives of others. By the way, it was Acmeism that began to introduce into literature a beautiful rule: “To live here and now”, which is still guided by the majority of the population. Although at that time there were those events that really could not be happy, that's why people tried to go to the mystical world, where everything is fabulous.
