How to adjust the handbrake?
Watch the video
Every car owner uses manual dailybrake: someone - for convenience when lifting, and someone - to use emergency braking. Over time, it becomes apparent that the handbrake does not hold as well as in the new car: a slight bias - and the car rolls down, and the number of clicks when raising the handle of the hand saw has increased.
To avoid an emergency, you need toto monitor the performance of car systems, especially brake systems. To check the parking brake, it is necessary, without lowering it, to switch on the first gear and start from the place. If the car goes, then you need to repair the brakes. But do not immediately sign up for a service center and spend money. In most cases, it is enough to adjust the handbrake. This operation is simple and does not require special training skills.
How do I adjust the handbrake?
The first thing you need to post a car onLift or go to the inspection pit to gain access to the adjusting nut. In the second case, you should lock the car by turning on the first gear, and for added reliability, place under the front wheels the chocks and raise the rear wheels with jacks. You also need to remember to raise the handle of the handbrake for 1-3 clicks.
Now you can proceed directly toadjustment of the hand brake; wire tension. To do this, loosen the equalizer jam nut and start tightening the adjusting nut of the equalizer. Too much force is not required, since later brake pads can wedge (handbrake handle stroke less than 4 clicks).
You need to check the result of the work in several ways:
- Raise the parking brake knob to the number of clicks specified in the instructions for your vehicle (average 5-7). Converging?
- Check how the rear wheels spin. Can not you move? So, you can screw back the lock nut and go to the last step of the test.
- Lower the handbrake lever and spin the rear wheels.
If the wheels rotate smoothly and freely without jamming, then the work is done successfully.
In the event that you can not achieve the desired braking effect from the parking brake, you should better understand the braking system of your car.
